New York state’s high level of public health spending is one of the reasons that the United Health Foundation rated it as the fourteenth healthiest state in the country in 2014. The state enjoyed the third highest combined federal and state per capita spending for public health efforts in the country as of 2014.
State funding for public health in New York totaled more than $2.14 billion—the second highest per capita spending in the nation in fiscal year 2013-14 when looking at state-sourced funding alone. This high level of funding has a direct effect on the ability of New York’s municipal and county public health departments to offer good salaries as a way to attract top public health professionals.
The New York State Department of Health works to improve public health through education, monitoring of communicable and chronic diseases and environmental hazards, and helping legislators craft progressive policies designed to promote public health. For example, New York’s epidemiologists monitor a large number of communicable diseases and were on high alert in early 2015 when a college student in Duchess County contracted measles. This created a potential public health crisis, since the individual had traveled by Amtrak train while contagious and could have spread the disease to other members of the public.
The combined efforts of a diverse array of public health professionals are improving the health status of the residents of New York. One highly significant result of their efforts is a 52% drop in infant mortality between 1990 and 2014.
