While some challenges still remain, public health officials have made great strides in improving the health of residents of the District. For instance, its rate of low birth weight dropped 4.7% over the past 20 years, and the rate of obesity in DC is one of the lowest in the country.
Washington, DC spent $104.22 per capita on public health in 2014—the fourth highest level of funding compared to the other 50 states. In addition, the CDC allots an additional $128.09 per person. This high level of public health funding directly impacts the number of jobs available to public health officials in the District and helps raise the bar on salary expectations.
Two DC agencies address public health in Washington. The DC Department of Health sponsors initiatives ranging from providing vaccinations and prenatal care, to carrying out occupational injury surveillance. Professionals at its Epidemiology Division monitor everything from HIV to TB and, in addition, conduct surveillance for food borne illnesses and bioterrorism.
Environmental health efforts are carried out by a different agency—the District Department of the Environment. Efforts range from tracking air quality to replacing lead pipes that carry drinking water. Environmental health scientists also try to mitigate exposure to arsenic and radon to protect DC’s citizens.
The combined effects of DC governmental public health employees, academic researchers, and non-governmental organizations are helping to bring about significant improvements to the public health of residents of the District of Columbia.
